What Is Basic Strategy?
Blackjack is unique among casino table games because player decisions directly affect the outcome. Unlike roulette or slots — where no choice you make changes the probability of winning — in blackjack, how you play your hand mathematically determines your long-run results.
Basic strategy is a complete set of rules, derived from probability calculations and computer simulations, that tells you the optimal action for every possible hand combination. Following it consistently minimises the house edge to its lowest possible value, typically under 0.5% in standard rule variations.
The Core Decisions in Blackjack
At any point in a hand, you'll face one or more of these choices:
- Hit — Take another card.
- Stand — Keep your current hand.
- Double Down — Double your bet and take exactly one more card.
- Split — If you hold two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands.
- Surrender — Give up half your bet rather than play out a losing hand (available at some tables).
Key Basic Strategy Principles
Hard Totals (No Ace, or Ace Counted as 1)
- Hard 8 or below: Always hit.
- Hard 9: Double down against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit.
- Hard 10–11: Double down against most dealer upcards (especially weak ones like 2–9).
- Hard 12–16: Stand against dealer 2–6 (dealer bust territory); hit against 7 or higher.
- Hard 17+: Always stand.
Soft Totals (Hand Contains an Ace Counted as 11)
- Soft 13–15: Hit (or double against dealer 4–6 at some tables).
- Soft 16–18: Double against dealer weak cards; otherwise hit on soft 17, stand on soft 18–19.
- Soft 19+: Always stand.
Pairs
- Always split: Aces and 8s.
- Never split: 10s (you already have 20) and 5s (double instead).
- Split 2s, 3s, 7s against dealer 2–7; otherwise hit.
- Split 6s against dealer 2–6; otherwise hit.
- Split 9s against dealer 2–6 and 8–9; stand against 7, 10, or Ace.
Why Deviating from Basic Strategy Costs You
Many players make decisions based on hunches or fear — for example, refusing to hit a 16 against a dealer's 7 because they're afraid of busting. But statistically, hitting that 16 is the correct play because the alternative (standing and hoping the dealer busts) loses money at a higher rate in the long run.
Every deviation from basic strategy increases the house edge against you. Over many sessions, this compounds significantly.
How to Learn Basic Strategy
- Use a strategy chart — These are freely available and show the correct decision for every hand vs. every dealer upcard. Many casinos permit their use at the table.
- Practice in free play mode — Most online casinos offer free-to-play blackjack. Use it to drill decisions without risk.
- Focus on the most common situations first — Master the rules for hard totals before moving on to soft hands and splits.
Important Limitations
Basic strategy does not guarantee wins in any given session. Blackjack still involves variance — you will experience losing runs even with perfect play. What basic strategy does is give you the best possible mathematical position against the house over time. It is a long-run tool, not a short-run guarantee.
Always set a session budget before playing and treat any given session as entertainment, not income.
